T'ai C'hi Chuan is an ancient Chinese martial art
that is becoming increasingly popular in western
cultures as a practical method of healing and
maintaining body and mind. In simple terms, the art is a
combination of movement and meditation. It has both
physical and mental elements.
The physical aspects can be subdivided into external
and internal parts. Externally, Tai Chi provides a
physical work out which strengthens the musculature,
tendons and ligaments. The art also stimulates the
skeleton to strengthen the joints and boost the immune
system. Physiologically, the sophisticated bio-mechanics
and relaxed pace of Tai Chi allow the muscles and
skeleton to be worked without risk of physical injury.
Internally, Tai Chi breathing techniques are designed to
massage the internal organs and maximize oxygen
absorption with the minimum of effort. This will
increase energy levels and promote good health from the
inside out.
The mental element of Tai Chi is
meditation. With regular training, participants learn to
focus the mind to develop a new level of mental clarity
and concentration. Of particular interest is the fact
that Tai Chi is renowned for reducing stress by active
relaxation. This is perhaps the greatest benefit of all
to people with a demanding lifestyle, who seek to
improve their health and maximize their physical and
mental performance.
